IndiNature Wins Big Retrofit Challenge, Showcasing the Power of Hemp Insulation in Home Decarbonisation

IndiNature, a pioneer in hemp fibre insulation solutions, has been named one of the seven winners of the prestigious Big Retrofit Challenge, a competition designed to uncover groundbreaking innovations in home decarbonisation.

Ele George, IndiNature’s Industry Collabration Lead, addresses delegates at ‘The National Retrofit Conference’.

The win underscores the growing recognition of natural materials as a viable, sustainable alternative in the retrofit sector, and positions IndiNature as a leader in the drive towards healthier, greener homes.

The Big Retrofit Challenge, co-hosted by the National Home Decarbonisation Group (NHDG), Innovate UK, The Retrofit Academy, and Futurebuild, attracted nearly 80 entries from across the UK. IndiNature stood out with its IndiTherm and IndiBreathe insulation batts, which are made from UK-grown hemp and offer a sustainable, high-performance solution for retrofitting existing homes.

Scott Simpson Co-Founder of IndiNature said: “We’re thrilled to be recognised as one of the winners of the Big Retrofit Challenge. This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our team and the growing demand for natural, low-carbon building materials. Our hemp insulation stands out as the lowest carbon insulation on the market because it not only reduces carbon emissions by insulating, but the material itself actually captures a net amount of carbon. It also improves indoor air quality, making homes healthier and more comfortable. This win is a clear signal that natural materials are becoming mainstream in the retrofit sector.”

As part of the prize, IndiNature had the opportunity to pitch its innovative solutions at the National Retrofit Conference, held at Futurebuild 2025 in London on 4th March. The company also participated in a networking session with key industry stakeholders, including members of the NHDG, to explore opportunities for scaling its solutions across the UK.

IndiNature was also be featured in two sessions at Futurebuild:

Winners’ Pitch Session: Tuesday, 4th March, 3:45 PM - 5:15 PM, National Retrofit Conference Stage

ACAN Fringe Programme Talk: Wednesday, 5th March, 1:15 PM - 2:00 PM, ACAN Stage – “Making it Mainstream: Unlocking the Potential of Natural Insulation”

The Big Retrofit Challenge win is a significant milestone for IndiNature, as it continues to champion the use of natural materials in construction. With the built environment accounting for a significant portion of global carbon emissions, IndiNature’s solutions offer a practical, scalable way to reduce the carbon footprint of homes while improving living conditions for residents.
