Collaboration for climate positive homes

UK bio-based construction leaders, HEMSPAN® and IndiNature® partner up to enhance homes with maximum carbon-capturing, UK-grown natural insulation.

Two leading UK sustainable construction companies, HEMSPAN® and IndiNature®, have announced a collaboration to advance bio-based construction, where HEMSPAN®'s innovative housing solution, the BIOHAUS® system, will now feature IndiNature Inside with IndiTherm natural insulation.

With the UK’s 29 million homes being amongst the least energy efficient in Europe, with around two-thirds in need of better insulation levels2, HEMSPAN® and IndiNature®’s partnership marks a significant step forward to more sustainable, energy efficient and healthy homes in the UK.

HEMSPAN®’s BIOHAUS® system is a complete whole-house approach that uses hemp and other bio-based materials, which reduces carbon emissions during construction, enhances energy efficiency, and supports regenerative farming practices.

IndiNature®’s leading natural fibre insulation system, IndiTherm, made from UK industrial hemp crops, offers bio-based industry certified insulation products that are durable, zero waste and lock carbon into buildings , reducing carbon emissions both in the construction and operation of homes. Unlike conventional insulations, IndiTherm also naturally regulates temperature and humidity to ensure comfortable and healthy living environments for occupants.

●      HEMSPAN’s BIOHAUS® system will now incorporate IndiNature's BBA certified, IndiTherm natural fibre insulation, which also has an updated Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) in progress, enabling transparency and awareness of significant sustainability benefits.

●      By incorporating IndiNature’s insulation products, it will further enhance the thermal efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of the BIOHAUS® system.

●      Both organisations source their materials from UK-grown hemp, so this partnership will pioneer the use of locally-sourced, renewable materials in construction, supporting UK agriculture and the environment.

Matthew Belcher, CEO and Founder of HEMSPAN®, comments:

"Our partnership is showcasing the power of British innovation in addressing both housing and environmental challenges. By combining our BIOHAUS® system with IndiNature's superior natural insulation, we're not just constructing houses, we're building healthier, more energy efficient and less carbon-intensive homes that are beneficial to both people and the planet”.

Alex McLeod, CEO of IndiNature, says:

"Partnering with HEMSPAN® aligns perfectly with our mission to revolutionise the construction industry by creating the manufacturing capability to supply natural and low carbon bio-based materials at scale. We're demonstrating that sustainability and affordability can go hand in hand. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in our commitment to reduce carbon emissions in construction, support local agriculture to re-establish the industrial hemp supply chain in the UK, and create healthier living spaces for all."

With the UK government recently announcing their commitment to building 1.5 million new homes, as well as planning and building reforms1, the BIOHAUS® system provides a highly scalable climate-positive solution that could also significantly reduce traditional construction programmes. With the integration of IndiNature’s insulation, this innovative system can not only help address the housing crisis, but also open up access to healthy and sustainable homes in the UK.
