Historic Environment Scotland Lodge

Case Study: Historic Retrofit

HES’s historic lodge demonstrates recommended retrofit design and materials solutions to the public.

Location

Edinburgh - between the Scottish Parliament building and Holyrood Palace.

Project Summary

This HES lodge has been retrofitted to demonstrate appropriate materials for taking care of historic and traditional buildings. Particularly important is the exceptional ability of natural fibre insulations to ‘breathe’ water vapour out of the building fabric and keep buildings dry and healthy. This reduces the risk of interstitial condensation which can lead to moisture build up, timber rot, rusted fixings and freeze/thaw spalling in masonry.

Natural fibre insulations are proven to work sympathetically with the hygrothermal performance (heat and moisture flows) of timber, stone, lime mortars and lime renders. This preserves valuable buildings and adds longevity.

Holyrood Park Lodge is a Category B listed Victorian lodge building, located in a prominent position at the entrance to Holyrood Park in Edinburgh. It was built in 1857 in a neo-gothic style to the designs of Robert Matheson, Clerk of Works for Scotland, who carried out a programme of gradual improvements to the Palace, the Park and the Abbey Precincts at the request of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
